During His final week, Jesus told this story while standing in the temple courts, facing hostile religious leaders. It was a pointed parable—one that directly addressed the heart of God’s kingdom purposes (Matthew 22.1-14). Along with His previous parable of the wheat and tares, this reveals a profound truth: God’s kingdom embodies radical grace, presents a mixed reality, and guarantees certain judgment.

The King’s Heart Revealed

A king is preparing a wedding feast for his son. This occasion is not just a social gathering; it reflects the deepest desire of God’s heart. He longs to celebrate His Son in the company of joyful guests. The king has prepared the feast and sent the invitations. Everything is ready.

Observe that those the king invited initially decline—these were individuals who should have felt honored to attend—but instead, they make excuses and turn away. Even worse, they mistreat the king’s messengers. This behavior is a clear reflection of what Israel’s leaders did to the prophets, and what they were about to do to God’s own Son.

Their rejection, however, does not thwart God’s purpose; it reveals it. When those who considered themselves worthy prove unworthy, the king sends his servants with new instructions: “Go to the highways and invite anyone you find.”

This overture is the Gospel in its essence. God’s grace extends beyond all human boundaries. The invitation that began with the covenant people reaches out to everyone—Gentiles, outcasts, and anyone willing to accept it. Paul captured this idea perfectly when he said, “to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1.16).

The Uncomfortable Truth

The story takes an unsettling turn when the servants gather “both bad and good”—not just the obviously righteous, but everyone willing to accept the invitation. The wedding hall fills with a diverse crowd, and Jesus wants us to understand that this is precisely how God’s kingdom appears in the present age.

Consider the parable of the wheat and the tares (Matthew 13.24-30). In this story, good grain and weeds grow together in the same field, often appearing almost identical until it is time for the harvest. The householder instructs his servants not to separate the two too early, understanding that acting too soon could harm the wheat along with the weeds.

In the church, both genuine believers and false professors sit in the same pews, sing the same songs, and bear the same name, “Christian.” From our perspective, they are often indistinguishable from one another. Only God knows the heart.

This truth should deeply humble us. While we can’t see the heart as God does, Jesus taught us that “by their fruits you will know them” (Matthew 7.20). We can and should discern spiritual fruit—such as love, repentance, and growth in holiness. However, this discernment is vastly different from making a final judgment. We can recognize patterns of spiritual life or spiritual deadness, but we cannot declare anyone’s eternal destiny. Our responsibility is to remain faithful ourselves while exercising wise and loving discernment regarding the fruit we observe in others.

The man stands speechless. What could he possibly say? The invitation was sincere, the host provided the garments, and the feast was ready. His exclusion came not from the king’s lack of generosity but from his own refusal to embrace grace.

This fact is at the heart of the Gospel. Gaining entry into God’s kingdom involves more than just accepting an invitation; it requires embracing God’s means of achieving righteousness. We cannot enter based on our own merits, trying to present our achievements as if they were fine garments. Isaiah reminds us that our righteousness is like filthy rags in God’s sight.

The wedding garment symbolizes the righteousness of Christ himself. Paul teaches that we must be “clothed with Christ” (Galatians 3.27). This concept isn’t about moral improvement or religious performance—it’s about letting go of our own efforts and receiving what only God can provide.

Grace for the Unworthy

What stands out to me most about these parables is that none of the guests genuinely deserve their spot at the feast. The first guests demonstrate their unworthiness by rejecting the invitation. The guests brought in from the highways aren’t worthy by any merit-based criteria. Even those who wear appropriate attire at the feast arrive solely by grace.

This reality reflects the parable of the vineyard workers (Matthew 20.1-16). Neither the early workers nor the late ones “earned” their whole day’s wage; it was the landowner’s generous decision. The same principle applies in God’s kingdom. We are all travelers on the road, gathered by grace, clothed by grace, and sustained by grace.

This truth should humble our pride and inspire our worship. If you’re at the feast, it’s because God wanted you there, not because you earned it. When you wear Christ’s righteousness, it is because He provided what you could never achieve on your own.

Living with the Mystery

I understand that the mixed nature of the church can be discouraging. You may observe hypocrisy among those who claim to follow Christ. You witness divisions, scandals, and failures within the visible church. At times, you might wonder if the entire institution is compromised.

Take heart—Jesus anticipated this very situation. The wheat and the tares will grow together until the harvest. The wedding hall will include both genuine and counterfeit guests until the King’s final inspection. This fact is not a flaw in God’s plan; it is part of His wisdom.

Our mission is not to rid the church of every false believer—that is God’s responsibility during the final judgment. Instead, our mission is to examine our own hearts to ensure that Christ’s wedding garment of righteousness clothes us. Additionally, the King compels us to extend His invitation to others who are traversing the roads of this world.

We should encourage one another to be faithful and lovingly confront sin when we notice it. However, we must remember that ultimate judgment belongs solely to God. He will separate the wheat from the tares at the right time, and His judgment will be perfect.

The Certainty of Joy

Don’t let the presence of tares discourage you from recognizing the truth of the wheat. Don’t allow counterfeit garments to diminish your confidence in the genuine righteousness you have received in Christ. The King knows His own, and the harvest will come. The feast will be glorious.

If you have accepted the invitation and come to the feast dressed in Christ, you can find comfort in this promise: what God has begun in you, He will also complete. The same grace that called you from the highways will support you until that final day when He removes every falsehood, and only the truth remains.

If you find yourself on the highways, unsure whether the invitation includes you, pay attention. The King’s servants are still reaching out to invite you. The message remains the same: “Come, for everything is ready.” The garment of righteousness is still offered freely to anyone willing to accept it.

The feast is genuine. The King is gracious. The invitation remains open.

Augustine emphasized the call to earnest service in the Parable of the Talents, while Martin Luther highlighted the concept of grace alone, as illustrated in the Parable of the Hired Laborers. Today, these timeless stories continue to shape our understanding of merit, justice, and the nature of grace.

In our contemporary world, where productivity and performance often dominate the discourse, the Parable of the Talents highlights the importance of faithful effort and wise stewardship of our gifts. Meanwhile, the Parable of the Hired Laborers reminds us that human measures of worth pale compared to divine grace. In modern congregations, these teachings offer wisdom for stewarding our communities and nurturing relationships.

They guide us in developing our talents while grounding our communities in the grace that sustains us all. These parables encourage a delicate balance: striving for excellence in service while embracing the inclusive nature of God’s kingdom, which welcomes all regardless of when they join the work. This inclusiveness offers comfort and reassurance, affirming that God values all.

Rather than conflicting, these parables present a harmonious view of the Christian journey. Saturday’s Column: Learning From Lehman

On more than one occasion, Jesus compared the kingdom of heaven to a wedding feast. I’d like to focus on the parable contained in Matthew chapter 22 specifically. Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son, and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come. Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted calf are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.”’ But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business. And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them. But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’ So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests.

“But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to his servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matthew 22:2-14).

Looking back on this parable with the benefit of hindsight, knowing the centuries of the Church’s history, it’s easy to understand most of what Jesus is saying. The king had an initial group of people that were invited to wedding, but refused the invitation. In the same way, the invitation of the gospel was initially given to Jews only. However, especially among the religious establishment—Pharisees and Sadducees—there was widespread rejection of that invitation. So, the king opens up the invitation to everyone in the highways, both bad and good, just as the invitation of the gospel was extended to Gentiles and Jews alike—everyone is invited.

However, there’s the strange detail near the end that can confuse us in our modern times, living so far detached from the culture that Jesus gave the parable to. We see a man at the wedding who doesn’t have wedding clothes on, and he gets kicked out of the wedding because of it! In our culture, we might wonder about this man, perhaps even feel sorry for him. Perhaps he didn’t have good clothes for a wedding because he was poor and couldn’t afford them. But the way we do weddings is different from the way they did weddings in Jesus’ time and culture. Back in that day, the master of the wedding feast would provide garments for all of the wedding guests. In fact, it would be a great insult for someone to refuse to wear wedding garments at the feast. That’s why the man is speechless when the king asks him how he got in there without wedding garments.

What does that represent? Baptism. As many of us as are baptized into Christ have put on Christ (paraphrase Galatians 3:27). Just as the master of the feast provides wedding clothes for the guests, God provided baptism for us. And just as the man without wedding garments was thrown out, none of us should expect to attend the wedding feast if we aren’t wearing the garments God provided at His own cost.

Mysterious Seeds

In recent weeks, packets of seeds have been mailed to apparently random homes across the country. Dozens of folks received the seeds, which have Chinese labels but have not been confirmed as originating from China. A few days ago, the USDA confirmed that the seeds were harmless but still cautioned recipients not to plant them. The seed packets included mint, sage, cabbage, roses, and other plants. One working theory is that this was part of a “brushing scam,” where people receive unsolicited items from sellers who then post fake reviews (Joseph Wilkerson, msn.com, “Mysterious China seeds received by Americans identified by USDA”). But, given the current political climate, skepticism–and concern, suspicion, and even fear– abound!

One of the major projects Kathy has begun in our backyard is a “cottage garden.” You can research the origin and history of these gardens, which started in England perhaps as far back as the Medieval period. These gardens have a mix of flowers, herbs, and bushes, and the more elaborate of these gardens have trees, bees, and even livestock. Ours is simpler, with climbing roses on a trellis, boxwoods in the middle, herbs planted throughout, but included among the many packets of seeds planted was a mix called bee feed.  It has been fun to see a variety of mysterious seeds appear, like California poppies, Chinese forget me not, Coreopsis, and Sweet Alyssum. We’re not sure where the tall fringed bluebells came from, but it’s incredible to see such an eclectic mix growing and thriving and demonstrating Genesis 1:11 before our eyes. 

In the New Testament, Jesus teaches several parables involving seeds. In one, a man sows wheat seed in his field, then his enemy sows darnel, a weed resembling wheat. Only after they started growing could the two be differentiated. The landowner instructs his slaves to let them both grow up and separate them at harvest time (Mat. 13:24-30). This parable illustrates the lives of the righteous and unrighteous, whose destiny will be sorted out at the judgment (Jesus explains the parable in Mat. 13:36-43). It certainly can apply to true and false teachers (lawless stumbling blocks), who can seem similar but are also distinguishable to the discerning.

Jesus also teaches the parable of the mustard seed (Mat. 13:31-33), which shows God’s power to do great things through seemingly humble deeds attempted in true faith. Matthew, Mark, and Luke record the parable of the sower, the soils, and the seed. Luke 8:11 identifies the seed as the Word of God. The soils represent the different conditions of heart, three of which are futile and one of which is fertile. The sower is the one who spreads the word to people. 

Then, there is the parable of the seed (Mark 4:26-29). A man casts seed on the soil, and then gets to behold the marvel of how it transforms from seed to sprout, the soil producing it from blade to head to mature grain in the head. Then, he harvests it. The power is not in the sower, who is not around (or, in the parable, awake) when the seed produces. The growth of the seed is a marvel even to the sower. Where is the power? In the seed!

There are certainly some malicious ideas and teaching out there in the world. Sometimes, even truth can be shared from improper motivation. But, God’s Word is a seed which can produce incredible things in a heart and life that is good and fruitful. Have you ever seen someone who seemed like a poor candidate to become a Christian, much less become a force for good in God’s Kingdom? How does that happen? We can talk about planters and waterers, but God causes the growth (1 Cor. 3:6). You may not be an eloquent, sophisticated Bible teacher or soul-winner. You may feel you are unskilled.  But, when you share God’s Word with others, you will see the wonders of this mysterious process. It has been said that persuasion happens in the absence of the persuader, as the Word gets to work on a heart. The power is in the seed! Let’s be about planting it however, wherever, and to whomever we can, then witness the marvel of the seed producing in the recipients’ lives. It’s God’s plan! It works in mysterious ways!

WHEN YOU FEEL WEIGHED DOWN

Mark and Derek Noel have an incredible story.  Mark, the dad, thinks he weighed 460 pounds at his heaviest, though he couldn’t find scales that could weigh him. He talks about the depression, the shame, even the claustrophobia of being that size. He learned that he had a food addiction.  Today, he weighs 220 pounds and his son has also lost an incredible amount of weight. There’s still a mental struggle there, but through food journaling, exercise, and, above all, a desire to live, Mark is winning that battle (Megan Messerly, Las Vegas Sun, 10/19/15).

There are a great many people who can relate to the struggle and some who know the success of a story like theirs. A lot of people have eaten themselves into such a state of being, and most people struggle with self-control and wise decisions concerning food especially where it is abundant and easily accessible. I imagine few of those who get themselves into such a state are happy with the results.

There is something weighing on people in a far greater way than this, though.  It can happen in the midst of drought and famine. It is not exclusively a “first-world problem.”  Sin is a universal burden (Rom. 3:23).  The writer of Hebrews even describes it this way. He says, “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us” (Heb. 12:1). David wrote, “For my iniquities have gone over my head; Like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me” (Psa. 38:4).

Sometimes, when people are discussing the sin struggles they are coping with, they say, “I just feel weighed down.”  They are describing the effects of guilt and unhappiness, a disappointment and self-loathing produced by a conscience all too aware of the persistent reality of sin.  But, instead of addressing the problem, too many try to work it out on their own and never leave the vicious cycle of serving sin. Paul says the ultimate outcome of this approach is death (Rom. 6:23; cf. Jas. 1:15). What can you do when you feel weighed down?

  • Be Determined. One older song begins, “I am resolved no longer to linger.” The Prodigal Son said, “I will arise and go to my father and will say” (Luke 15:18). The journey home begins with making up your mind that you need to go.
  • Be Dependent. The Prodigal Son looked at the conditions at home and saw his need of the father. He says “my father’s” (Luke 15:17), “my father” (18), “Father” (18), “his father” (20), “Father” (21). The father was able to solve the problem and lift the burden.  The son simply had to swallow his pride and go to his father.
  • Be Decisive. The boy took action.  His resolve led to his return. He went from wanting to walking. As the rest of the parable reveals, the boy didn’t regret his decision.  There was celebration and reward in coming home.  Contrast that with the burden of staying in sin.

It’s very possible that you find yourself weighed down.  What good reason can you give for staying in that condition? Wouldn’t you rather lose the weight? I know you’ll feel better if you do!

AFTER 31 YEARS, MURDER VICTIM IS FOUND ALIVE

There was a disappearance and a murder confession.  So, the last thing police expected when they stopped at “Mrs. Schneider’s” apartment in Dusseldorf, Germany, was to find the 1984 murder victim, Petra Pazsitka, talking to them.  Thus began the unraveling of an elaborate plot by Ms. Pazskitka to disappear and reemerge with a new identity.  She was successful for 31 years, living in several West German cities without a passport, driver’s license, and social security card. She supported herself by “living off illicit cash-in-hand work” (via uk.news.yahoo.com). Why did the college student who had just completed her thesis on computer languages leave the grid and go into hiding? So far, there has been no explanation given. Perhaps there will eventually be more details and insight into this bizarre situation, but for now a grief-stricken family can take some measure of comfort in knowing their loved one they thought was dead is alive.

Spiritually, we are surrounded by the living dead.  It is the result of choices they’ve made.  This is even true for some who have abandoned God’s family and reemerged in the world having cast off the privileges and position of that honorable name they took on when they were baptized into Christ.

Paul says, “The mind set on the flesh is death” (Rom. 8:6). He tells Timothy, “But she who gives herself to wanton pleasure is dead even while she lives” (1 Tim. 5:6). God diagnosed an entire church, Sardis, “having a reputation of being alive” as being dead (Rev. 3:1). Of course, nothing illustrates the point better than Jesus’ parable of the Prodigal Son.  The younger son was off in the “far country,” and through that lifestyle he reached the point of desperation and despair. He repented and came home, where his father declared “my son was dead and is alive again” (Luke 15:24).

Sometimes, it makes no sense to us why a brother or sister leaves God’s family, abandoning spiritual life, hope, and heaven for spiritual death, hopelessness, and hell.  Yet, we must continue to search for them.  Let us pray that we can find those long since declared dead and encourage them so that we “save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins” (Jas. 5:20). Search for them. Appeal to them. Help them reclaim the blessed identity they had when they had “life and peace” (Rom. 8:6).
