Overcoming Evil With Good

Although he faced accusations of holding objectionable views, his actual offense was his effectiveness in conveying conservative and Bible-based concepts. Unable to defeat him in debates, his opponents resorted to silencing him with a bullet.

Thursday commemorated 24 years since the 9/11 attacks that profoundly impacted our nation and altered countless lives indefinitely. For those of us who can recall, those feelings remain vivid. The haunting images of the smoldering World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and that desolate Pennsylvania field remain etched in our memories. Unease lingers in the pit of our stomachs when we hear the audio from that day: the radio chatter of first responders and the frantic calls to loved ones from the cellphones of those trapped on doomed planes or in the World Trade Center towers from which there was no escape.

Occurrences such as these deeply affect us and lead us toward hopelessness. If we are not cautious, they may also lead us to feelings of anger, a desire for retaliation, or a sense of hopeless withdrawal.

In moments like this, the words of the apostle Paul resonate: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12.21). These words serve as a vital reminder, encouraging us to go beyond mere resistance to evil and to face it with the goodness of Christ actively.

Evil’s Real Power—and Its Limit

Evil exists, and the Bible presents it plainly. Paul had witnessed persecution, political corruption, and violence up close. Nevertheless, he refuses to let evil prevail in the end. Why?

Because Christ has already achieved victory through the cross and resurrection, the most formidable weapon of Satan—death—has been rendered ineffective. Evil may inflict pain, but it cannot prevail against the people of God.

Responding to hate with hate allows darkness to take root in our hearts. Responding with retaliation might seem instinctive, yet it merely compounds the damage. As Martin Luther King Jr. once stated, drawing inspiration from the words of John 1:5, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.” Paul articulates the same concept in a compelling, Spirit-inspired statement: “overcome evil with good.”

Goodness as an Active Weapon

This call does not constitute passive avoidance. Paul’s instruction serves to motivate. In the lines of the surrounding context of Romans 12.21, he clearly articulates it:

• “Bless those who persecute you…” (v. 14).

• “Repay no one evil for evil…” (v. 17).

• “…if your enemy is hungry, feed him…” (v. 20).

Kindness transcends mere courteous expressions. This love, filled with the Spirit, nourishes, forgives, and serves, even when faced with mistreatment. This type of goodness illuminates a realm that transcends our earthly existence. According to the latter part of verse 20, such actions can “heap burning coals” upon the heads of those who wrong us. While vengeance ultimately belongs to God (Romans 12.19), we can find solace in the understanding that our goodness serves as a formidable weapon against evil.

Three Gospel Tasks Reframed

Considering Romans 12.21, the church’s mission takes on renewed urgency:

Evangelism: Proclaiming the ultimate good.

The goodness we provide transcends mere humanitarian efforts; it embodies the message of Jesus Christ, who was crucified and has risen from the dead. As the world grows weary of violence and retribution, individuals seek hope that evil cannot extinguish. Our testimony of forgiveness and reconciliation through Christ serves as a powerful act of overcoming evil.

Edification: Strengthening the saints.

It is not uncommon for believers to feel disheartened or frustrated as troubling news continues to accumulate. Romans 12 encourages us to uplift one another in maintaining a gentle spirit. By engaging in worship, study, and fellowship, we nurture goodness and stand against cynicism.

Benevolence: Doing tangible good.

Addressing needs—nourishing the hungry, providing solace to the grieving, assisting neighbors in distress—is not a secondary endeavor. We are fighting a battle of the spirit. Each act of compassion proclaims that darkness does not hold the ultimate authority.

Living the Verse Today

How can we apply Romans 12.21 today?

• Pray for enemies and victims alike. Name them before God.

• Guard your words. Refuse to spread hatred online or in conversation.

• Share Christ. Offer the gospel as the deepest good, the cure for sin’s root cause.

These actions may seem insignificant in the face of widespread evil, yet they hold great power because God amplifies them. The kingdom flourishes through small, Spirit-inspired acts of kindness.

Hope That Overcomes

When Jesus confronted the greatest evil—an unjust cross—He triumphed not by summoning legions of angels but by surrendering His life and rising again. His resurrection demonstrates that goodness is not a sign of weakness, but rather the unstoppable power of God.

The anniversary of 9/11 and Charlie Kirk’s tragic assassination serve as poignant reminders of the urgent need for strength in our world. Let us stand firm against the shadows of this time. With our hearts anchored in Christ, let us overcome evil with good—making the most of our time through evangelism, edification, and benevolence until His return.

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12.21).

Let The Lord “Judge”

Scripture shapes our understanding of the Father. Yet, we often fall into the habit of crafting our own version of God in our minds. Someone once said, “You can safely assume that you’ve created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people as you do.” We tend to justify our shortcomings or find excuses to dismiss our poor choices. This inclination is all too natural.

Take our son Rich, for example. Whenever he gets caught doing something he shouldn’t, he blames the dog. One time, I walked into the kitchen to find him covered in Nutella, his hand buried deep in the jar. His first instinct? To convince me that the dog was responsible, not him. This behavior is a common human tendency—to rationalize our actions.

To be human is to have enemies. Chances are, you know someone you struggle to love, or you know someone who doesn’t love you. Jesus assumes we will encounter enemies when He instructs us to “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matt. 5:44). The real question isn’t whether we will have enemies; it’s whether we will love and forgive, even at a great cost.

In 1 Samuel 24, we meet two very different men: Saul, the jealous and paranoid king, and David, the humble and courageous king. The lesson here is encapsulated in what David says in verse 12: “Let the Lord judge.” This highlights the power of a clean conscience.

As we explore this chapter, pay attention to David’s demeanor. While Saul hunts him like a dog, David is forced to hide in a cave, running for his life. When given a chance that most would seize, he chooses restraint. Why? This scripture offers profound insight into how God’s people should respond to opposition.

First, we learn from David to not take revenge (verses 4-7). Of all the places Saul could have gone to relieve himself, he chose the very spot where David and his men were hiding. Had it been anyone else, Saul would have met his end there. David’s men urged him in verse 4, “This is the day the Lord told you about when He said, ‘I will give your enemy into your hand, and you can do whatever you want to him.’” While David had every right to harm Saul—after all, he was the rightful king of Israel—he chose not to. 

This sort of self-control seems rare today. When given the chance to retaliate against our enemies, we often leap at it, especially when we feel justified. The principle of “an eye for an eye” is far easier than forgiveness and self-restraint. David was tempted; he crept closer and even cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. Yet, as we see in verse 5, he felt remorse. A clean conscience mattered to David—he couldn’t harm the Lord’s anointed. 

Despite Saul’s many attempts to kill him, David recognizes that it’s not about personal grievances. We often fixate on the pain others cause us and forget an essential truth: they, too, are chosen by God, created in His image. If they are Christians, they are redeemed by Christ; if not, they desperately need the Gospel. If we could look past our hurt, we would see their need for love and forgiveness. 

Like David, we must be cautious of those who urge us to act on our natural instincts for revenge. Even well-intentioned friends may encourage us to justify bad behavior. If anyone tries to twist God’s command to love and forgive, be careful. God will never lead you to take revenge. 

Second, we learn from David to make the first move (verses 8-15). David runs after Saul to clarify and resolve their conflict, risking much in the process. Communication is key in reconciliation. We often wait for the other person to reach out, especially if we believe they are in the wrong. We might think, “I won’t forgive until they ask for it.” However, being a Christian means embracing the unnatural. God equips us with the strength and courage to approach our enemies first.

David confronts Saul’s worries in verse 9, asking, “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘Behold, David seeks your harm?’” Conflicts often arise from misunderstandings or misinformation. David clarifies his intentions in verse 13, stating, “But my hand shall not be against you.” The longer a conflict festers, the more distorted our views become. We must strive to clarify our motives as we seek reconciliation.

Who are you avoiding that you should pursue? Are you waiting for them to make the first move? Instead, take the initiative to clarify the situation and gently confront any misconceptions.

Finally, we learn from David to commit to doing good (verses 16-22). David and Saul reach an agreement, though Saul’s promise doesn’t last long; he soon returns to hunt David with 3,000 men. Yet, David remains committed to doing good for Saul and his household for as long as he is king. This commitment is evident in how David responds to Saul’s death (2 Sam. 1:17–27) and in the story of Mephibosheth (2 Sam. 9).

True reconciliation is marked by ongoing love and kindness. Conflict gives us an opportunity to grow closer, deepen our understanding of ourselves and others, and glorify God. If a genuine commitment to do good isn’t reached, then reconciliation hasn’t truly occurred. C.S. Lewis once noted, “Everyone thinks forgiveness is a lovely idea until he has something to forgive.” 

Many of us cherish the idea of reconciliation, but when it comes time to act, we find it challenging.

Despite living in a cave and constantly on the run, David slept peacefully, knowing it wasn’t about him. His mindset was clear: “Let the Lord be my Judge.” God sees your behavior and stands by you. Let Him be your Judge and maintain a clean conscience. 

David exemplifies this mindset in action. He resisted harming Saul, took the initiative, and sought the good of his enemy. We have much to learn from him.

A Road Less Traveled

Romans 12:19 says, “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord.” Getting our own revenge is something that is very easy to do. Our human emotions will naturally push us to take revenge. We want to get even with those who hurt us. We want to hurt those who hurt us. We want to insult them and avenge ourselves. Why? Because if we are honest, it feels good. It feels good to brake check the person that cut us off. It feels good to insult the person that spoke rudely to us. It feels good to take revenge. 

The problem is if we want to build a relationship with the world and with the church, we must leave the avenging to God. We should expect the world to hurt us because it’s driven by sin. The Christian, however, shouldn’t be the same because they are led by God. 

Revenge never ends well. It doesn’t cultivate relationships, it doesn’t build up our influence. It harms our influence, and it shows that we don’t truly trust that God will avenge us. As Christians, God is our avenger. We must be careful to not practice what God has rightfully claimed. By following this command, we open the door to a healthy relationship with those in the world, as well as our Christian family. 

Romans 12:20 continues, “To the contrary (rather than take vengeance, CP), “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Rather than give in to the desire to take revenge, we are to treat our enemies like a friend. Feed him if he is hungry (don’t take joy in their hunger), 

If our enemy is thirsty, give them a drink (don’t taunt them and laugh in their face when they suffer). By doing this, we are acting like God’s chosen. 

Self-control is the basis for many Christian principles. Letting God take vengeance takes a lot of self-control, but ultimately it leads to healthier relationships and opportunities to evangelize to a world that doesn’t know any better. Take the road less traveled, and God will bless us in the end!

Wednesday’s Column: Third’s Words

I’ll be repeating the book of I John in present-day terminology. It’s not a true translation of the book, as I am not qualified to do so. It will be based on an exegetical study of the book and will lean heavily on the SBL and UBS Greek New Testaments, as well as comparisons with other translations (ESV, NASB, NIV, ERV, NLT). My goal is to reflect the text accurately, and to highlight the intent of the author using concepts and vocabulary in common use today. 

This is not an “essentially literal” translation, and should be read as something of a commentary. 

Friend or Foe

This is how you know you’re with him: he gave us his spirit.1 Loved ones, don’t believe every spirit, but really put them to the test to see if they came from God. You’ll need to test them because a whole lot of fake teachers were sent2 to the world. 

This is how you know if a spirit came from God: every spirit that comes from God will acknowledge that Jesus was sent to earth as a human. If a spirit refuses to acknowledge this, it isn’t God’s. In fact, it’s the spirit of Jesus’s enemies. You heard that the spirit of Jesus’s enemy was coming — it’s here now. 

Young ones, you are from God and have already beaten these spirits. How? Jesus is far more powerful than his enemies, and he’s with you. These enemies come from the world, so they talk like it — and the world listens to them. But we came from God. If you know God, you’ll listen to us. God’s enemies are the ones who don’t listen to us. This is how you can tell the difference between a legitimate spirit and a fake one.

1 In this context, πνευματος is used to mean something like “ethos” or “system of teaching”. God sent a legitimate belief system, then Satan counterattacked by sending a ton of illegitimate information to make truth more difficult to find.  

2  This is further evidenced by εξεληλυθασιν in 4.1 and εληλυθοτα in 4.2. The former describes false teachers sent to earth. The latter describes the one true teacher sent to earth. 

Tolerating Different Opinions

Wednesday’s Column: Third’s Words

Dale and I were recently talking about the marked differences in preference among gun owners, bikers, etc. He made the observation that those who are pro-fill-in-the-blank (revolvers vs magazine-fed, 1911 vs Glock, etc., cruisers vs sport bike, Chevy vs Ford, and so on) are often very enthusiastic about their preference and very hostile to what is the antithesis of their preference. 

To use the term in its purest and least twisted sense, there is very little tolerance concerning differences of opinion among those who are passionate about the same things. With motorcycles, those who enjoy cruisers might scoff at those who prefer sport bikes. “They’re more difficult to maintain, you can’t practically go long distances, they’re more dangerous…” Sport bikers might do the same, “Cruisers aren’t as fast or agile, they’re old man bikes, you lose so much power with a belt or shaft drive, they don’t look as cool…” We could go on forever, but if you have any interests where differences of opinion abound (which is just about any hobby or interest), you know what I’m talking about. 

We face the same things in the church. Culture influences our preferences in matters of opinion, and I don’t have to go into detail about those opinions or traditions. We’re aware of the range of preferences and the way we can be tempted to respond to opposing preferences. Of course, I’m not talking about doctrines that cannot and should never be altered, but of opinions and traditions that do not affect salvation. 

The same responses we observe in every other aspect of our lives – passionate support or passionate opposition – can sometimes be observed in the church. We exist in the world, but we are supposed to be different from the world. Matthew 5.43ff tells us that we should love our enemies. We sometimes treat those with different preferences in the church as enemies; the level of hostility that we (and I mean me, too) can show over those preferences proves this. Do we love them anyway? Are we praying for them? 

Matthew 5.46-48 points out (in principle) that if we’re only nice to those on “our side,” it means nothing. In fact, it’s wrong! Twice in this passage we are called to change and be different from everyone else. That is a salvation issue. 

The word “tolerance” has become perverted over the last generation or so, but we can’t forget that it does play a role in our faith. We must not tolerate false doctrine, but we must tolerate our differences in matters of opinion. This carries over to everything we’re passionate about! 

How we treat those who disagree with us will show others who we serve far more effectively than our professed beliefs will. Does our treatment of those with whom we disagree show that we are genuinely Christian, or does it serve as a perfect deterrent? This is up to us. As things slowly return to normal we can change the status quo in a very positive way – let’s make the best of it!
