Habakkuk: Living By Faith (II)

Faith often requires waiting patiently. What is now may seem like what will be, but trust in God’s character and power calls on us to “wait upon the Lord” (Isa. 40:31). What does Habakkuk have to say for the one struggling to keep faith in faithless times?

Habakkuk is struggling, but he desires to know God’s answer in the situation. There is a tremendous difference between railing out at God like a spoiled, uncontrolled toddler and reaching up to God begging for clarity and understanding while trusting that He can help. So, Habakkuk dutifully reports himself like a guard looking out from the walkway of a defensive wall, watching and waiting for an answer from God (1).

Starting in verse two, the Lord answers him. God wants him to write His answer down, a permanent and practical record for others to read. Habakkuk is told that these words are for the not-too-distant future (3). 

From verse four to the end of the chapter, God gives Habakkuk a lesson on faith.

LIVING BY FAITH (4). God starts the lesson with the contrast between the proud and the righteous. What He says about the proud sets the stage for what follows in the bulk of the chapter. His heart is not right within him. As the result, we will see what he is capable of. Yet, the righteous will live by his faith. This had to be comfort for Habakkuk as he struggles, by faith, to understand why God is using the wicked Chaldeans to punish the sin of the prophet’s country of Judah. The righteous would need to cling to their faith as they endured the events prophesied in chapter one. Think about how that has not changed today, even if the specifics are different. The world seems to be winning, and at times God may even use people and events to try and refine our faith. The proud has an impure heart, but the just shall live by faith (Rom. 1:17; Gal. 3:11; Heb. 10:38). 

LOSING BY FAITHLESSNESS (5-19). It appears that God is describing the character and behavior of the Babylonians. Though they are stronger and winning for the present, their immorality and ungodliness would undo them. Their voracious appetite for sin and destruction (5) would bring about their downfall (cf. Gal. 6:7-8; Prov. 22:8; Hos. 8:7). 

This is captured by the five “woe” statements in this chapter. “Woe” is an interjection of lamentation, found 50 times in the prophets. Ten percent of the occurrences are right here. It forms a list of charges that would indict the Babylonians. It would be a song sung by those who witnessed and endured their cruelty (6). The lamentation would be for those who:

  • …Take advantage of others financially (6-8). They would be overwhelmed by those who got the financial advantage over them. 
  • …Trust riches to get them what they think they want (9-11). They were impoverishing themselves, sinning against themselves. 
  • …Turn to violence and bloodshed to get what they want (12-14). God’s glory would eclipse not only whatever they temporarily achieve, but the name they briefly have for themselves (cf. Heb. 11:25). 
  • …Take advantage of others socially and sexually (15-17). What they sought to do to others would happen to them. The cup of judgment in God’s hand, which He was making others (like Judah) drink from as Babylon passed it to them, would come around to them and turn glory to disgrace. 
  • …Trust idols to save and lead them (18-19). They are proud of their invention, then turn and serve and worship it even though it cannot speak, guide, or save. 

We may feel more sophisticated than the Babylonians today, but we are wise to learn from their mistakes. The law of love will keep us from taking advantage of others in any way. Nor will we put our trust in money or anything that competes with the place only God is to occupy (Mat. 6:33). But if we do, God wants us to know how it will end. 

LOOKING UP BY FAITH (20). The end of the lesson is short and succinct. It will only be heeded by the faithful one of verse four. “The Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him.” This truth should produce hope, patience, confidence, but also reverence and fear. It will keep us from being hasty and impulsive, remembering that “God is in heaven and you are on the earth; therefore let your words be few” (Ecc. 5:2b). 

Give To God What Is God’s

Matthew 22:15-22 (ESV) says,

15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.

We often speak of this passage as an example of how the Pharisees tried and failed to trap Jesus in a religious question.  We also know we have a responsibility  to pay taxes that we owe.

But let’s focus on the last part of Jesus’ response, “…and to God the things that are God’s.”  What is God’s?  If we use the same test that is used in this passage of whose image is on something, what is God’s image on?  What do we owe God?

We don’t put an image of God on anything. “So God created man in his own image,

in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Gen. 1:27). God’s image is on us.  We are made in His likeness.  We are what is due Him.  So how do we give ourself to God?

What if we ask ourselves what’s the most important thing to do?  Let’s look at another time someone quizzed Jesus.  “And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:28-31).

Jesus gave two commands:  loving God and loving your neighbor.  This might sound like a test in school, “its just two questions” but then each has ten subparts and each answer is dependent on the previous.  These were two loaded commands.  This was an overview of the 10 commandments from Exodus 20.  The first four were about loving God and the last six were about loving your neighbor. In John 14:15, Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” I don’t mean for this to be a lesson about the Ten Commandments, but a reminder to love God completely. 

If you are not loving God as Jesus described…

If you are not loving the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength…

Then now is the time.

When The Storms Of Life Are Raging

Jesus, the master teacher (Luke 8:1-21), shows His humanity as He fell asleep as the disciples sailed across the Sea of Galilee (23). Assuming the boat to be large enough to transport at least 13 people and provide Jesus room to repose, it makes the situation more impressive when “a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger” (23). We know that at least four of the men in that boat made their living negotiating these waters as fishermen, and we would guess they had seen their share of storms. But this one was apparently exceptional. They woke Jesus up in a panic, exclaiming, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” (24). 

When Kathy and I were young newlyweds, we worked with the church in Livingston, Alabama. Our best song leader was a man who grew up close friends of Gus Nichols’ children. His name was Selman Falls, and his repertoire of songs was vast. He taught us the song, “He Will Hide Me,” written by Mary Servoss in 1878. The first verse says, “When the storms of life are raging, tempests wild on sea and land, I will seek a place of refuge, in the shadow of God’s hand.” Few metaphors seem more fitting than to call our trials and difficulties “storms.” I confess that more than one of these has led me to panic and to pray, “Master, Master, I am perishing!” Our trials disturb our peace, rock our world, and threaten our stability. 

Will you notice how Jesus handled this? First, He acted. Then, He admonished. He did not lecture while waves crashed and water encroached. He took care of the problem. But, then He said, “Where is your faith?” Luke mentions no sober self-reflection on the part of the disciples. Instead, they marveled. They responded, in fear and amazement, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?” (25). Storms are opportunities for us to ask, then answer, such an identity question. It’s the right question. Not, why did this storm come? Why me? But, Who then is this? Who is the master of the maelstrom? Who is the commander of the crushing confusion? 

Chances are great that several of you are in the midst of some kind of storm. The boat is rocking, the winds are howling, and the prospects are not promising. What will you do? More importantly, what will you allow Him to do? He still stills storms!

Life has dramatically changed for us on a daily basis. Whether it be liberties that have been restricted or routines that have been disrupted, we have experienced significant upheaval. Some of it has been dramatically better, as for many we have been given a slower pace that has produced much more time with family and projects done together that we will always treasure. There is vast potential for much better marriage and family habits to come from this experience, as well as a reshuffling of priorities on the other side of this quarantine.

Of course, for many this will be remembered as a season of trial. We are hearing of members of the church who have contracted and even died with this deadly virus. Church families around the nation have members who are part of the at least ten percent of those who have lost their jobs or been laid off. How many parents, grandparents, and other loved ones are in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, and residences where we cannot have physical contact with them for their safety’s sake? As devastating as anything, though, is the dreadful disruption to “church life” because we cannot assemble together for church services, fellowship activities, devotionals, seminars and workshops, and the like. There will be permanent, far-reaching impacts physically, economically, and socially, but what about spiritually?

Guard Against Social Disconnection

For the time being, we are more or less forced into social distancing. Hopefully, this can be modified soon and ultimately return to pre-virus levels. It will be important to return to the physical dimension of contact with each other provided uniquely through our assemblies. My prayer is that we will treasure fellowship like never before. We will zealously obey the command to consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds through our assemblies (Heb. 10:24-25), being “devoted to one another in brotherly love” and to “give preference to one another in honor” (Rom. 12:10) between our scheduled services (Acts 2:46). Don’t let the devil use this to form a permanent social wedge between you and the church.

Guard Against Stress And Anxiety

There are no psychological studies to measure the effects of mass isolation and sheltering in place on a scale like this has caused. No doubt, the more functional and stable the home environment and the more emotional support available to a person, the better he or she will fare. How many cut off from their normal routines are also constantly feeding themselves a steady diet of the news, which none can rightly classify as edifying? Conspiracy theories aside, there are the stressors like the ones mentioned above. Fears can eclipse faith and worry can lead to weakness. This trial is an excellent opportunity to build trust (Psa. 37:3-6), endurance (Jas. 1:3), righteousness (Heb. 12:11), hope (Job 13:15), and more. 

Guard Against Spiritual Doldrums And Self-Absorption

This has tested our time management skills. Having more time on our hands does not automatically translate into “making the most of the opportunity” (Col. 4:5). Will we have done more binge-watching or Bible reading through this? Will we have tended more to self-care or finding ways to serve (phone calls, texts, emails, cards, etc., to spiritual family and others we might influence and encourage)? Will we have focused more on how this has impacted us or how we can impact others?

The good news is that, for all of us, this is a story whose last chapters have not been written. Each day is an opportunity for spiritual growth and improvement. None of us would have wished something like this to happen, but each of us chooses what we will make of it. Let’s remain vigilant. Certainly, Satan would like to take advantage of us (2 Cor. 2:11), and he could use our current circumstances to dislodge us from faithfulness. Yet, Scripture promises something that we can count on: “Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (Jas. 4:7-8a). May that be the end result for us all!
