Wednesday’s Column: Third’s Words

I’ll be repeating the book of II Peter in present-day terminology. It’s not a true translation of the book, as I am not qualified to do so. It will be based on an exegetical study of the book and will lean heavily on the SBL and UBS Greek New Testaments, as well as comparisons with other translations (ESV, NASB, NIV, ERV, NLT). My goal is to reflect the text accurately, and to highlight the intent of the author using concepts and vocabulary in common use today. 

This is not an essentially literal translation, and should be read as something of a commentary. 

The Next Earth

With that in mind, the last day is going to sneak up on us. The sky will be ripped apart, which is going to be very loud. All of the basic elements will be unraveled because of how hot it’s going to be. This planet and everything we do on it will simply disappear. Since you know the last day’s going to sneak up on you and the earth’s going to be destroyed again, how should you be living? You should be godly and avoid gratifying every impulse. You should be ready to face the end. In fact, you should be hurrying God along so we can get this over with! 

Jesus promised us a brand new sky and a brand new earth. Only good people will live on the new earth. Since we’re all looking forward to this, make sure you’re in a right relationship with God. Make sure you view God’s delay as being his compassion. Remember, he doesn’t want anyone to die lost. Paul said some of these same things in his letters, too, because God had him say it. Some of his stuff is deep and complicated, and some people have taken advantage of this. They’re ignorant and unstable and they twist the rest of scripture, too. They’re digging their own grave. 

Conclusion

Since you already know this stuff, make sure you don’t fall for their lies. Don’t let godless people drag you away from your faith! Instead, grow in your relationship with our master and rescuer Jesus Christ. Remember that he cleared your record, let that encourage you! He is incredible, powerful, and deserves all the credit until time meets eternity.
